Charleston Style
This is, in simple terms, a lyric video for the song Charleston Style. However I tried to give it more design and atmosphere than a standard lyric video. The idea being that the lyrics would themselves be the main character. This led me to have to learn Adobe After Effects in order to give it the sense of flow and dream-like memoryscape I was hoping for. It took a while, I must say, but in the end I feel the video helps faithfully express and sympathetically support the song.
We've Got Girth
Back when Bruce Bentley and I had a band called Girth—with Chris Thack, Sean McCleery and Chris Burrel—we wrote a kind of mock theme song along the lines of Hey Hey We're the Monkees. It was a tune we never made a proper recording of and after Bruce passed away I took it upon myself to try to do that. It is included on the Sky High album. A few years later, my daughter, Ruby, attending film school, decided to try her hand at a music video. This was during the darkest, most isolating period of COVID. She chose We've Got Girth as a starting point. Given the restrictions and limitations on socializing, the family pitched in. It's a fun song, a fun video and if there were bright sides to COVID, for me, this is definitely one.
Vicars of Vinyl
For several years during the 2010s I played in a 70s pub band with singer/guitarist and old pal Tim Lenehan as well as a few other talented fellows at different points along the way including Sean McCleery, George Ringas, Dave Cranor and in this particular lineup, one night in 2018 at the Frog and Firkin in Toronto, Andrew Valentine and Chris Bender.
